Results 2021

Like Energy, mobility is a fundamental catalyst for any economy. Mobility solutions are a prerequisite of social inclusion by providing access to jobs and essential services such as health care and education.

Five entrepreneurs were selected to receive the third-of-the-series “Energy Access Booster” awards. The winners were announced during the COP26, held in Glasgow, Scotland on October 31 – November 12, 2021.

The awards are offered to sustainable mobility entrepreneurs operating in Africa or Asia.

The awards are sponsored by TotalEnergies, Enea Consulting and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

The five winners of the 2021 energy access booster call for projects are:

 

BasiGo

 

They remove the barriers to e-bus adoption in Africa via an innovative battery subscription model in Kenya.


   
MellowVans

 

Operating in South Africa, they build and distribute world-leading light electric delivery vehicles that provide low cost, efficient and clean delivery services


   
Mobility for Africa

 

Who provides electric three-wheeler carriers to rural communities in Zimbabwe, targeting rural farmers and women, suffering lack of transportation means from farms to communities


   
SMV Green Solutions

 

In India, their main mission is to allow drivers to own their electric rickshaws and improve their daily earnings


   
Tuverl

 

A public transportation app, aiming at simplifying and increasing efficiency for customers and transportation operators in Kenya and Zimbabwe

 

The winning entrepreneurs will be supported in their development during the next 12 months for the purpose of reaching the investment stage. They will receive strategic advisory consulting support and/or a financial contribution of up to $50,000 per entrepreneur, operational/local support, and visibility of the project.

 

Results 2020

Access to reliable, affordable and clean energy is United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7. Achieving it means providing electricity to 1 billion people and clean cooking systems to 3 billion people worldwide by 2030.

Four entrepreneurs were selected to receive the second-of-the-series “Energy Access Booster” awards. The winners were announced during the Global Off-grid Solar Forum Nairobi, held in Nairobi, Kenya on February 18-20, 2020.

The awards are offered to energy access entrepreneurs operating in Africa or Asia, with a focus on two sectors: clean cooking and waste-to-energy.

The awards are sponsored by TotalEnergies, Enea Consulting, Acumen and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

The four winners of the 2020 energy access booster call for projects are:
 

Divine Bamboo

 

Operates in Uganda and produces briquettes from local bamboo seedlings.


   
Acacia Innovations

 

Operates in Kenya and produces briquettes from sugarcane bagasse which it mainly sells to schools. Acacia also distributes improved cookstoves.


   
Agnisumukh

 

Operates in India and develops innovative radiant heat energy-efficient gas burners.


   
Grassroots Energy

 

Operates in India and develops affordable biogas production and treatment systems and distributed CNG bottles to urban and peri-urban restaurants.

The winning entrepreneurs will be supported in their development during the next 12 months for the purpose of reaching the investment stage. Five African entrepreneurs were selected to receive the inaugural “Energy Access Booster” awards. The winners were announced during the Unlocking Solar Capital: Africa conference, held in Kigali, Rwanda on November 7th and 8th, 2018.

The awards are being presented to entrepreneurs who are implementing energy access projects in Africa, with a focus on four sectors: green mini-grids, sustainable mobility, refrigeration, and energy for drinking water and agriculture.

The awards are being sponsored by TotalEnergies, Enea Consulting, Acumen and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

The selected entrepreneurial companies are:
 

Agsol

 

Operating in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia, Agsol is a product development company replacing laborious hand labor and diesel machines in rural areas with solar-powered agricultural transformation equipment.


   
Kivu Green Energy

 

Operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kivu Green Energy is developing solar mini-grids in eastern DRC.


   
Mucho Mangoes

 

Much Mangoes operates a solar mango drying unit in Kenya and is planning to develop a cold storage facility using thermal energy storage technology to reduce post-harvest losses and increase incomes for 200 mango farmers.


   
Solar Freeze

 

Solar Freeze markets solar-powered refrigeration solutions to Kenyan farmers based on a micro-franchising approach.


   
Sunny Irrigation

 

Operating in Kenya, Sunny Irrigation is developing solar irrigation pumps for small- scale farmers through a Pay-As-You-Go model.
